Interpersonal communication is important because of the functions it achieves. Whenever we engage in communication with another person, we seek to gain information about them. We also give off information through a wide variety of verbal and non-verbal cues.

The fact that interpersonal communication takes two people means that it is indivisible. Without the second person, interpersonal communication is impossible. Thus, the parties to interpersonal communication are a duo: a couple, a pair, or perhaps adversaries.

Communication is a vital part of the nurse’s role. Theorists such as Peplau (1952), Rogers (1970) and King (1971) all emphasise therapeutic communication as a primary part of nursing and a major focus of nursing practice. Long (1992) further suggests that communication contains many components including presence, listening, perception, caring.

A qualitatively interpersonal relationship is both unique and irreplaceable. There are other features such as interdependence, more disclosure, as well as intrinsic rewards. It is rare to have more than a few of these relationships in your life and losing one can be devastating because you will never have a relationship exactly like that one again.

I understand that interpersonal communication competencies can allow me to achieve my communication goals effectively wile preventing the other party from losing face. Therefore, is important to know the behavior best suited for a particular situation, applying that behavior in the given context and desiring to communicate in a manner that is competent (DeVito, 1999).

Communication skills are a part of the spoken and written language. These are the extra factors, which complete a communication process. Communication refers to the exchange of thoughts and ideas with the intention of conveying information. Communication is a two way street that includes vocalization as well as gesticulation.

Interpersonal skills are the skills that a person uses to interact with other people. Interpersonal skills are sometimes also referred to as people skills or communication skills. Interpersonal skills involve using skills such as active listening and tone of voice, they include delegation and leadership.

An example of this type of communication might be two people passing each other on the street and saying “Good morning” or “How do you do?”. They may be that brief, or they may be a continuing occurrence, say between a student and his or her teacher. The two may spend an entire school year together and never speak again in their lives.
